SAINT DOWN IN A THRILLER
22 April 2009
Logan Saints went down to arch rivals Sunnybank in a thriller 27-20 on Saturday night at Oldmac Oval.
A strong Sunnybank team finished over the top of the Logan, scoring in the final two minutes to edge out the Saints in what was an end to end game of rugby.
“There is a touch of the silvertails versus the battlers in our local derby but we still prepare for this game as if it is any other club" a philosophical Logan coach Mark Forrester said. "As a team we are disappointed that we didn’t finish them off. To worry about anything else is a distraction. I put the pressure on the backs to stand up and deliver this weekend and they should be proud of their efforts."
Forrester singled out man of the match Luke Leeming and centre Colin Beer (pictured) for praise.
"Luke showed what a quality player he is with his best performance of the year. He has listened to the coaching staff and senior players and doesn’t make the same mistake twice. Yyou can’t expect too much more from a young man playing his first year in open Rugby".
"Colin had an off week against Norths. He took some pretty frank feedback on the chin and played out of his skin tonight, his defence with fellow centre David Wilder was inspirational."
Forrester also mentioned inspirational captain Rex Harrison and fill in front rower David Temperley as stand out contributors.
Saints went into the half time break leading 15-10 after tries to hardworking second rower Josh Robinson and flyhalf Chris Staunton. Logan looked to have tied up a win when Luke Leeming outpaced the cover defence to give the saints a 20-17 lead with 7 minutes to go.
“A number of crucial errors in both defence and attack killed of any chance of us winning today." Forrester said. "The players were gutted to let such an important victory slip from our grasp. The way the competition is panning out away wins are very important. We now move onto to another away game against Redlands next week."
