LOGAN EDGED OUT BY EASTS IN THE WET
24 April 2010

The Logan Saints were desperately unlucky to lose 13 - 11 to the Easts Tigers in a sloppy clash in the pouring rain at Homestead Park on Saturday.

The Saints were determined to strike back in the round 3 clash after losing to the University of Queensland last week, but the weather intervened and Logan were forced to drastically change their game plan.

Easts responded better to the slippery conditions and played for field position throughout by testing the Saints outside backs with towering kicks.

In the midst of the swirling rain, one of these bombs was spilt and Easts took advantage of the opportunity to run in a long-range try.

The Saints hammered away at the Tigers defence throughout, and despite the conditions, a number of potential opportunties came up when Logan kept the ball in hand, with winger Pat Edwards notable for making the most of these chances and breaking into the clear.

Half-back Tim Burrows kept the scoreboard ticking over with two penalty goals before Logan managed to cross the try line with a five-pointer to outside-centre Lathe Rua.

But those efforts weren't enough, as the game deteroiated into a physical stoush in the middle with both sides' forward packs trading blows in the midfield and mistakes crept into the match.

The Tigers threatened to score another try late in the game to extinguish any hope of a Saints comeback, but fullback Chris Staunton, with help from his brother and replacement flanker Jay Staunton, provided the crowd with a rare highlight when they prevented Easts from scoring a runaway try in the corner when they desperately tackled in cover defence one metre out from the line.

Club spokesman Peter Tisdall was disappointed with the result but praised the team's effort in trying conditions.

"We really need to start stringing some wins together so that we can make sure that we're at the right part of the ladder when it comes to finals time," said Tisdall.

"But there's plenty of positive signs out there and hopefully it's just a matter of getting the combinations settled and the results on the scoreboard will follow."

In other matches, the Saints' second grade side went down 33 - 17 to Easts in a hotly contested match which could have gone either way.

The Saints third grade side suffered a 25 - 10 loss to a well-organised Tigers outfit.

The Logan Saints continue their Brisbane first-division rugby union campaign next week with away matches against Wests at their ground at Sylvan Road, Toowong.
