LOGAN CITY SAINTS DEFEAT COMPETITION LEADERS
27 July 2009

Logan Saints shocked competition leaders GPS with a 20-12 win at Yoku road on Saturday. The result means the resurgent Saints have now won 4 from five in the second round and further tightens the race for the top four positions in the comp.

Coach Mark Forrester is adamant supporters and players need to keep a lid on any talk of semi final rugby this year.” It’s a long way off and we have coming up four games in 14 days we need a miracle. It will do your head in if you let it as a group we are concentrating on three or four things each week and when the more the pressure comes on it is then easier it is for the playing group to focus.”

“Mathematically any one from Redlands in 7th position can make the final four it really just depends on the results. The cut off may be as low as 50 or 51 points you almost need a slide ruler and a calculator really only Wests and Sunnybank have trailed off performance wise so everyone’s playing semi final rugby now” said Forrester .

The effort of knocking over the competition front runners has even more merit when there six changes to the previous weeks teams. “A lot of the credit for todays win needs to go to second grade coach Doug Dry the boys who came up from second grade all played out of their skins and knew our patterns. “ said Forrester.

Logan began strongly again with ever green winger David Wilder scoring a try and Tim Burrow posting a penalty and a conversion. Going into half time Logan held a slender 10 - 7 lead, however their swarming defence was clearly frustrating GPS a point Forrester rammed home to his players at half time.

“Defence wins the big games it doesn’t matter what level or code of rugby you’re playing GPS average 33 points a game in attack the more we denied them points the more their frustration levels grew. Their second try came after the bell of an intercept to say I was happy with the defence today is a bit of an understatement.” said Forrester

Logan Forwards again bettered their rivals with Fraser Vaughn , Leon Mentz and Kris Zeipes  all making outstanding contributions while backs Daniel Porsbo-Pedersen, Luke Leeming and Kris Staunton all led the way in defence.
