THE SAINTS TAKE OUT THE TIGERS
3 July 2010

The Logan Saints comprehensively defeated the Easts Tigers 17 - 7 at Bottomley Park on the weekend to keep their finals hopes alive.

A muddy pitch guaranteed that the two teams would slug it out in the midfield throughout and both forward packs took to their task with enthusiasm.

A solid performance from the scrum and powerful ball-running from the Saints' pack put Logan on the front foot from the opening whistle.

Strong field position resulted from Logan's dominance in the tight and the Saints threatened the try line constantly.

But despite the ascendency of Logan's attacking play, first points came from the boot of half-back Tim Burrows who kicked an early penalty goal for a 3 - 0 gap.

It was number-8 Tim Woods who scored the Saints' first try from a driving play close to the line and Burrows converted from a difficult position for a 7 - 0 lead going into half-time.

The second half began in much the same fashion with an earnest scrum contest being dominated by the Saints and again setting the platform for positive play.

Woods soon crossed the try line for his second try of the day and tenth for the season. Again, Burrows converted a difficult attempt and stretched the lead to 17 - 0.

A late try from the Tigers' right wing reduced the deficit to 10 points but the Saints had done enough to seal a strong win against quality opposition.

Saints' coach Wayne Greenhalgh was happy with the result in difficult conditions.

"This was a danger game for us because we really needed to come away with the points if we're going to make the most of our season but obviously Easts are a good team who always play well," said Greenhalgh.

"Full credit to our guys though because they made the most of their chances today and when we play like that, then we're a chance of knocking off any team in the competition."

The Logan Saints continue their first-division rugby union campaign next week with matches at Homestead Park against the Wests Bulldogs.
