Two key players being on the receiving end of yellow cards was not enough to stop the Saints running out 18 - 17 winners over Norths-QUT at Homestead Park on the weekend.
Norths-QUT were given a sniff of victory when senior Logan forwards, number-8 Tim Woods and prop Leon Makiri were marched for ten minutes in succession, leaving the Saints with a six-man scrum and scrambling to hold out the fast finishing visitors.
The match began with the exchange of penalty goals with scores at 3 - 3 before Norths-QUT managed to get their attack in order and camp on the Saints try line for an extended period.
But Logan's defence was up to the task and strong tackling shut out the attackers before it was the Saints chance to look dangerous.
Lock Kris Ziepes charged into the defence on the end of a wide-ranging move but was dragged down just short of the line before Woods received the ball from the back of a scrum and was also stopped within tantalising reach of scoring.
It was winger Pat Edwards who broke the deadlock when he used superior size and strength to smash through a handful of Norths-QUT defenders close to the line to give the Saints a 8 - 3 lead.
Half-back Tim Burrows converted that try and added a penalty goal shortly afterwards which gave the Saints a ten point lead going into half-time.
Shortly after the break, the Saints scored another try in the corner for a 18 - 3 lead, which was enough of a gap to make the prospect of a Norths-QUT comeback unlikely.
A try under the posts to the visitors off the back of a forwards drive was enough to put a hint of worry into the Saints' supporters and with Woods and Makiri following each other from the field in quick succession, the Saints were suddenly on the back foot.
Norths scored another try after a sustained period of attack against the seriously undermanned Logan defence which performed admirably with only 13 on the field.
With the scoreline at 18 - 17 in favour of the Saints, Woods and Makiri returned to the field for the final minutes with Norths-QUT in strong attacking position.
In range of the posts, Norths-QUT were awarded a penalty and had the opportunity draw ahead with a penalty goal - instead they chose to kick for the corner with a view to playing for the win.
From the resulting line-out, Norths-QUT were stunned with the ferocious attack on the breakdown from the Saints forwards and before long a mistake was made and the match was over with the Saints holding on for a dramatic victory.
The Logan Saints continue their first division rugby union campaign next week with away matches against the Sunnybank Dragons at Oldmac Oval.
