WESTS NEXT TO FALL TO LOGAN
16 July 2011

The Logan Saints stormed into second place on the first division rugby union ladder with a powerful 38 – 12 victory over the Wests Bulldogs at Homestead Park on the weekend.

Despite regular skipper and number-8 Tim Woods having played his last game for the season due to work commitments, the Saints were determined to keep their run of recent successes alive.

The Bulldogs struggled to contain Logan from the outset and the first half was virtually one-way traffic.

By half-time, the Saints had established a 33 – 5 lead with five-eighth Chris Staunton excelling in the playmaking role, as well as posting a five-pointer himself, with full-back Kai Pheeney also turning in a solid performance.

Open-side flanker Tim Griffiths starred in the tight and also managed to cross the line for a try.

The second half turned out to be a much more even contest between the two sides with a single try being scored by each as a mounting injury toll affected the Saints’ game.

Winger Pat Edwards left the field with a broken finger along with captain and prop Rex Harrison who was replaced which led to young lock Kris Ziepes taking the captaincy reins late in the match.

The Logan Saints continue their first division rugby union campaign with matches against Norths at North Brisbane next weekend.
