The Logan Saints continued their good run of form with a strong 43 – 14 demolition of the Souths Magpies at Homestead Park on the weekend.
The Saints maintained their hold on second spot on the first-division rugby union competition ladder with the win as the battle for finals position tightens.
Logan opened the scoring with hard-working flanker Tim Griffiths charging down an attempted Souths’ clearing kick with Saints’ five-eighth Chris Staunton being the lucky beneficiary as he dived on the ball to score.
Half-back Tim Burrows sparked a try in the far corner of the field shortly afterwards when he slipped a pass to winger Jarom Mareikura who crossed the line to establish an early 14 – 0 lead.
Souths were shell-shocked from the blistering pace set by Logan from the outset but their resolve in defence held for a sustained period after the first two tries, with the Saints holding the ball for long periods of time without crossing for any more points.
But a sustained period of quick forward charges resulted in big number-8 Acey Motuga dummying his way over the try-line from close range to put the Saints ahead 21 – 0, which became 24 – 0 shortly afterwards with a Burrows’ penalty goal.
Just before half-time, the Magpies struck back as a defensive lapse at the back of a line-out left an uncharacteristic hole in the Logan defence and the sides went into the break at 24 – 7.
With the resumption of play, Logan kept up their exciting attacking play and were denied an early try due to a dubious call from a touch judge, but a line-out which came a few phases later set the platform for Logan to score again for a 26 point lead.
Saints’ prop Sef Faagase was the next to score as he drove over the line next to the posts.
In the dying minutes of the match, Souths managed their second try but Logan immediately retaliated through Burrows who darted clear from the scrum base to score in the corner for a 45 – 14 final scoreline.
The Logan Saints continue their first-division rugby union campaign next week with matches against GPS at Yoku Road, Ashgrove.
