LOGAN LOSE IN THE MUD
5 June 2010

A strong finish from the Logan Saints was not enough to snatch victory away from GPS in their first-division rugby union clash on the weekend, with GPS running out 24 - 13 winners in wet conditions.

The muddy pitch restricted both sides attacking ambitions and a battle of attrition ensued with GPS getting the better of the exchanges.

Two early tries saw GPS skip ahead before the Saints reduced the lead with two penalty goals to half-back Tim Burrows which kept Logan within striking distance.

Both sides battled in the dour conditions from that point onwards, playing for field position.

GPS' kicking game proved superior in the wet and the Saints found themselves in possession but deep in their own territory and struggled to make headway through GPS' defence.

The match looked to be slipping away from Logan in the second-half until the injection of the Saints' bench saw an increase in enthusiam.

A handful of powerful runs from replacement prop Hayden Makiri close to the ruck had GPS backpedalling and laid the platform for number-8 Tim Woods to score a late try to reduce the gap.

But the Saints resurgence came too late and GPS grimly held onto their lead for an 11 point victory.

In other matches, the Saints' second-grade side continued their run of good form by notching a 18 - 12 win.

Logan outplayed their rivals convincingly and thoroughly deserved to notch another strong win over solid opposition.

The Saints' colts side stole a 17 - 15 GPS in the dying minutes of the games.

Logan was trailing by five points with virtually no time remaining before the full-time whistle when a try in the corner saw the scores brought level.

A side-line conversion from full-back Benjamin Le Prou sealed the win to the delight of the Logan team.

The Saints' third and fourth-grade sides struggled against quality sides from GPS and went down 29 - 6 and 31 - 5 respectively.

The Logan Saints have a bye this weekend and play their next fixture against Brothers at Crosby Park on 19 June.
