MUDCRABS SMASHED BY SAINTS
25 June 2011

The Logan Saints came away 67 – 15 winners when they took on their local rivals Redlands Mudcrabs in a first-division rugby union clash at Homestead Park on the weekend.

The Saints were desperate to post a win after being narrowly edged out by the Sunnybank Dragons last week looked solid from the opening whistle as an outclassed Redlands side struggled to keep up with the pace of the game.

The first points of the match came when Logan winger Pat Edwards returned a kick with venom before off-loading to full-back Kai Pheeney who drew the last defender and popped the ball to tireless flanker Tim Griffiths who scampered over the line for a 7 – 0 lead.

Logan’s other winger, Jarom Mareikura became involved soon after and crossed in the corner for a try of his own to extend the lead further.

Redlands were struggling to match the Saints’ intensity, and this was demonstrated clearly when Logan’s powerful scrum shredded the Mudcrabs front row on the way to stealing a tight-head win which almost lead to a first-phase try.

But despite a fumble on the prior play, Saints captain and number-8 Tim Woods dove over from the back of the pack to make the score 21 – 3.

The Saints continued to impress with Edwards and Pheeney again combining in attack as the full-back crossed the line followed by other tries to five-eighth Chris Staunton, prop Rex Harrison, half-back Tim Burrows before Woods claimed his second of the match.

Redlands rallied late in the game when a number of replacements had taken the field for Logan but it was too little too late as the Saints recorded one of their strongest wins of the season so far.

The Logan Saints continue their first-division rugby union campaign in two weeks time with matches against Easts at Bottomley Park.
