The Logan Saints moved into the top four of the Brisbane first-grade rugby union competition with a strong 21 - 15 win over the Wests Bulldogs on Saturday.
The round four clash played at the Bulldogs homeground at Sylvan Road proved a tough test for the Saints but they maintained composure throughout and led for most of the match to record a convicing victory.
Number-8 and new skipper Tim Woods scored in the opening minutes for an 7 - 0 early lead before half-back Tim Burrows extended it to 10 - 0 with a penalty goal shortly after.
Wests employed tactics of trying to overpower the Saints up front through their huge forward pack and after some extended pressure, their tactics paid dividends when they drove over the line for their first try.
But Logan struck back soon after with flanker Johnny McMillan breaking free into the clear for a 30 metre run before being dragged down short of the line.
Wests were penalised for an infringement at the ensuing breakdown and the Saints took advantage with Woods plunging over the line for his second try of the match and fourth of the season.
Another penalty for foul play saw Burrows line up another penalty goal from 40 metres out to take the Saints into half-time leading 18 - 5.
After the break, the Bulldogs stuck to their gameplan of trying to take Logan on in the forwards and again their approach reaped rewards when they scored another driving try to bring the Saints' lead back to six points.
The Saints responded by knuckling down and working hard in defence for long periods in the second half and managed to extendtheir lead again through another penalty awarded for foul play.
Wests, trailing by nine points with just minutes remaining, were awarded a penalty of their own and opted to kick for goal to bring the final score to 21 - 15, a result which meant that the Bulldogs escaped with a bonus point for losing by less than seven points.
Other players to impress for the Saints were prop Hayden Makiri who revelled in the tight forward exchanges and outside centre Lathe Rua who looked dangerous throughout.
In other matches, Logan were unlucky to go down 32 - 17 to Wests in the second-grade match.
The Saints showed a strong improvement from recent weeks but came up against an organised Bulldogs team who were determined to make life difficult for Logan.
The Saints' third-grade team suffered a 52 - 7 loss while the fourth-grade team went down 15 - 10 in a tight encounter.
The Logan Saints continue their Brisbane first-divison rugby union campaign with matches against the Souths Magpies at Logan's homeground at Homestead Park, Shailer Park.
