SAINTS BRING DOWN MAGPIES
8 May 2010

The Logan Saints consolidated their position in the top four on the weekend with a dominant 33 - 10 victory over the Souths Magpies on the weekend.

The top-of-the-table and previously undefeated Magpies scored the first try of the match after the opening exchanges between the teams by spreading the ball wide from near halfway and slicing through the Logan defence for a 7 - 0 early lead.

Tragedy struck the Saints at the same time with captain and in-form number-8 Tim Woods sustaining a serious break to his hand while trying to snuff out the attack and Logan were forced to bring on replacement prop Leon Makiri early to fill the gap.

The Saints focussed their attack at the Magpies scrum and the pressure mounted with Souths defending a set-piece 5 metres out from their try line.

Logan's forwards splintered the Souths scrum and the Saints were unlucky not to immediately score. Instead they were awarded a penalty and opted for another scrum in virtually the same spot.

Again, the Magpies wilted under the strong pressure and Logan pushed over the line for a try and to level the scores at 7 - 7.

Shortly afterwards, the Saints were on the attack again resulting in a spectacular try to winger Pat Edwards in the corner.

With the ball being spread wide from a breakdown, a series of forwards including hooker Jay Staunton and replacement Makiri hit the line and pushed the pass before Edwards found space and smashed through the looming cover defence to plant the ball in the corner for Logan to take the lead.

The game tightened after half-time with both sides struggling for possession and the Saints unable to extend their lead through a number of difficult attempts at penalty goals.

Logan scored early in the second half with some powerful driving play from the forwards and the points began to flow from that point onwards.

Edwards claimed his second try after involving himself in a passing interchange with fullback Chris Staunton over 50 metres and a final try by the Saints towards the end of the game extended the lead to an untouchable 33 - 10.

The victory takes the Saints to third on the table as they look to their next match against Norths-QUT at Hugh Courtney Oval next weekend.
